Institutes within the GSMS
GUIDE
The Groningen University Institute for Drug Exploration (GUIDE) is a multidisciplinary organization including medical (GUIDE-UMCG) and the Pharmaceutical Sciences within the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (GUIDE-GRIP) focusing on drug and drug-oriented research.
The GUIDE PhD Council is a newly formed council aiming to better represent GUIDE PhDs and to collaborate with the GUIDE organisation in order to offer the best training and networking opportunities for GUIDE PhDs.

SHARE
Science in Healthy Ageing and healthcaRE
Research Institute SHARE was established in the 1980s as an institute mainly to carry out applied research in the field of Health Sciences. As of 2012, nine scientific research programmes, each with their own core fields of research, are embedded in the institute.
The SHARE PhD council represents all PhD Students of the various research groups within SHARE. The aim of the council is to be a central contact point for SHARE PhD students in case of questions, problems, ideas, etc. The “Share Welcome Guide for new PhD students” is one of the activities within SHARE to make the PhD student’s life a bit easier! Furthermore, we are actively involved in the SHARE and GSMS Education Committee to represent PhD students, and in the PhD Community consisting of all PhD councils within the RUG. We have recently reorganized ourselves to focus on specific themes. These are represented by the following committees within SHARE:
Communication
Education
GSMS PhD council
Seminars symposia (e.g. the SHARE Day, organized every November), and social activities
Internationalisation
You can contact us by email or by talking to us during one of the events.
BCN
The Research Institute Brain and Cognition was established in 2005. The institute is part of the Graduate School of Medical Sciences and Research School of Behavioural and Cognitive Neurosciences.
The BCN PhD student council is a student organization which represents all PhD students and promotes their broad interests within the BCN research school (GSMS/UMCG or not), in terms of education, opportunities, connectivity, and networking, among others.
Please do not hesitate to contact us or any of our members if you have suggestions, ideas or questions of any subject (if we don’t know the answer, we could contact you with someone who knows), we are here for you!
KOLFF
The W.J. Kolff Institute is a leading research group in the field of biomedical engineering, materials science and medical imaging.
Named after Willem Johan Kolff who developed the first artificial kidney, and established in 1997 to be a centre of expertise for biomedical materials science and its application. However the scope of research of the groups within is much broader than that, and within the institute we have a huge variety of projects ranging from robotics, nano or biomaterials, to chemistry and radiology.
With such a diverse background the PhD council is a bridge between the PhD students and the institute. Our main goals are:
Communicate the needs of PhD students to the institute.
Ensure the educational needs of PhD students are being met.
Co-operate with other research groups on courses, events and ideas.
Interact with the GSMS to promote the interests of the PhD students and the institute.
Organise events, workshops, introductory days.

CRCG
Fundamental, Clinical and Translational Cancer Research.
The Cancer Research Center Groningen (CRCG) was established in 2012. The aim is to translate fundamental insights in oncogenesis and tumour behaviour from basic research into cancer prevention, improvement of early detection of cancer, and better treatment for cancer patients.
The mission of the CRCG is to clarify the molecular mechanisms that determine malignant transformation in a broad spectrum of tumors and to translate these fundamental insights into improved early detection and treatment of cancers. This will ultimately lead to personalized cancer therapy, thus reducing the unintended side effects of treatment on normal tissues and improving the quality of life of cancer survivors.
The CRCG was founded in 2012 as an independent research institute of the University Medical Center Groningen. Four key research programmes have been established:
These programmes are supported by 60 PIs and 139 PhD or MD/PhD students who participate in the UMCG’s Graduate School of Medical Sciences (GSMS). The various programs are characterized by a strong interaction between basic and translational research programs, as shown by joint research meetings and projects.
